«I do not intend to speak about; just speak nearby»: Mit diesem Satz beginnt Trinhs Debütfilm Reassemblage, der während eines mehrjährigen Lehraufenthalts im Senegal entstand. Der auf 16 mm gedrehte Film stösst eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der Tradition des ethnografischen Films an und löst eine Suche nach eigenen, weniger hierarchischen Form der Beschäftigung mit der Welt aus. Die künstlerische und ethische Praxis des «in der Nähe Sprechens», die der Film anstelle eines Sprechens «über» oder «für» vorschlägt, prägt das filmische und theoretische Schaffen von Trinh T. Minh-ha bis heute.
“I do not intend to speak about; just speak nearby” – These words open Trinh's debut film Reassemblage, that was made during an extended teaching stay in Senegal in the early 1980s. The film, shot on 16 mm, initiates a critical examination of the tradition of ethnographic film and triggers a search for less hierarchical forms of engagement with the world. The artistic and ethical practice of “speaking nearby”, which the film proposes instead of a speaking “about” or “for”, continues to shape Trinh T. Minh-ha's cinematic and theoretical work to this day.
